Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine "deserves all the support possible against Russia" and asked the US Senate to ratify the package "as soon as possible" because "there are lives at stake", according to the Efe agency.
"The transatlantic allies are united in supporting freedom and democracy," said Von der Leyen in a post on her social network account X (former Twitter). Other leaders of the European Union had already reacted to the US decision and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, defended that the approval of this aid package "sends a clear message to the Kremlin" that "those who believe in freedom and in the Charter of the United Nations will continue to support Ukraine and its people." Michel stated on the X network that this new package for Kiev will be "crucial" for the future of the war and regretted that its approval had been "pending for a long time." The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, added that, with the package approved by the US House of Representatives on Saturday, Ukraine "will have the transatlantic support it needs to face Russian aggression." The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, also stated that "the only path to peace is to help the Ukrainian people defend themselves" and stressed the importance of the EU and the US remaining "united for freedom and against aggression." The United States House of Representatives approved on Saturday night, in Washington, the expected aid package for Ukraine, worth 61 billion dollars (57 billion euros), to face the Russian invasion. This military and economic assistance, which is the result of months of tense negotiations, ended up receiving support from both parliamentary benches and must now be approved in the Senate, with a Democratic majority, where a first vote could take place on Tuesday. The aid package for Ukraine is the most significant of a set of three laws being voted on in a rare Saturday session, which includes support for Israel and Taiwan, in a total amount of 95 billion dollars (89 billion euros). The House approved the Ukraine support bill with 311 votes in favor and 112 against. After the result was known, congressmen celebrated and waved Ukrainian national flags. After several months of blockade, the American House of Representatives finally adopted the large aid plan for Ukraine, but on the battlefield this delay will have cost Kiev several military setbacks against the Russian Army.
