A man set himself on fire outside the New York City courthouse where former President Donald Trump is on trial Friday in the designated protest area.

CNN reporters at the scene said they saw a man engulfed in flames for about three minutes, according to Reuters.

The outlet also reported that the man was throwing pamphlets, which authorities are now collecting.

At least one person used a fire extinguisher to try to put out the flames, while a paramedic appeared to be treating the man.

NBC News reported, citing law enforcement sources, that the man was placed in an ambulance, which transported him to a hospital.

The incident occurred after a jury of 12 people and six alternates was seated in the trial, paving the way for opening statements to begin next week.

The case involves a $130,000 payment that Trump’s company made to his then-personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, who in turn gave the money to adult film star Stormy Daniels as hush money to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter she says she had with Trump a month before the 2016 presidential election.

The former president has pleaded not guilty to the 34-count indictment, brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and has denied ever having an encounter with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.

Trump also faces criminal investigations in Washington and Georgia related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, as well as in Florida, where he allegedly mishandled classified documents after leaving office in 2021.

But the New York case is the only one that is expected to go to trial before the November midterm elections, in which the former president is considering a rematch against President Joe Biden.
