A man who shot dead a burglar who broke into his home to steal tools has been jailed for six years and three months in Ciudad Real, Spain. The homeowner was also ordered to pay €96,000 to the victim’s parents and €19,000 to each of his siblings.
According to ABC Spain, the Spanish public prosecutor initially asked for a 12-year sentence for the octogenarian. However, the sentence was later reduced to six years after hearing from the jury.
The incident occurred in the early hours of 1 August 2021, when the man broke into the elderly homeowner’s country property after being disturbed by noises. After getting out of bed, the now-convicted man saw a person carrying a chainsaw and other tools around 15 metres away.
Realising that he was being robbed, the man, who had several weapons in his home, went to where the thief was and shot him in the chest. A second shot hit him in the back.
The robber, who had a history of theft, died from his injuries.
