It's not just American Taylor Swift who can surprise her followers. In fact, in North Korea, the panoply of new songs... is not even a topic. On Wednesday, the North Korean regime released a new song – and a video clip – praising leader Kim Jong-un for being a "friendly father".

In this song, which premiered on the country's state television, there are no ‘tortured poets’ [Taylor Swift's 11th album, released this Friday, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’]. In fact, the message is crystal clear: "Let's sing, Kim Jong Un, the great leader" and "Let's boast about Kim Jong Un, a friendly father" are some of the verses sung in unison by children and adults who are apparently excited to be part of the project. On Tuesday, a live orchestra performed the song in front of the North Korean dictator, during a ceremony to mark the completion of the construction of 10,000 new homes.

The release of this new propaganda theme came after state television changed the name it uses to designate a holiday, fueling speculation that it will serve to solidify Kim's position as a ‘lonely leader’ and independent of his predecessors. The holiday that celebrates the birth of the country's founder, Kim Il Sung, is no longer called ‘Sun Day’, but is now called ‘April holiday’.
