More than a third of Nigerian children are child labourers

Over 24 million Nigerian children between the ages of five and 17, representing 39.2 percent of the population, are trapped in the country’s child labour system as forced labourers, according to estimates by Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics.

While the agency estimates that more than half of all children between the ages of five and 17 are involved “in some form of economic activity,” the percentage cited refers to children in forced labour, “who are too young or are likely to be harmed psychologically or physically.”

In this sense, some 14.3 million children are directly involved in what is considered “hazardous work.”

By region, the most serious situation is in the northwest, where 6.4 million children work, half of them in dangerous conditions.

A constant in the agency report, reported by Premium Times, is that almost all children (94%) are forced to collect the wood and water they need to work.

Nigeria is notorious for the kidnappings of students, but children who travel long distances in search of these materials are also in great danger.

Some 16.3% of children involved in forced labour were injured in the course of their work. While boys are more likely to be injured, girls are more often forced to work in domestic tasks.
