As we age, several changes happen in the body, including in the brain. What you may not know is that there are strategies that help preserve and promote brain health, with the goal of aging with quality.

In this regard, psychiatrist Uma Naidoo, who is also a nutritionist at Harvard University in the United States, revealed to CNBC that she scrupulously follows some rules to maintain a healthy mind. One of them is avoiding ultra-processed foods.

Other strategies include preparing colorful dishes and increasing the consumption of micronutrients. B vitamins, C, D and E, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc are allies against anxiety. "Many micronutrients have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can protect the brain from long-term deterioration. They also help produce and regulate chemicals that affect mood, such as dopamine and serotonin," she says.

The focus on healthy fats, such as extra virgin olive oil and avocado, should also be greater. Both have anti-inflammatory properties. On the other hand, it is equally important to reduce the consumption of foods that increase blood sugar levels, such as refined wheat flour, white rice and other starches.

Finally, Uma Naidoo reinforced the importance of listening to the signals that the body gives. The specialist is peremptory: if you usually feel moody, nervous or irritated after consuming certain foods, you should eliminate them from your diet.
