Heard of the benefits of retinol? Keen to add it to your skincare routine? There are a few things you need to know before you get started. Retinoids are "an umbrella term for the entire family of vitamin A derivatives", including retinol, "the best-known of this group of complexion-improving actives", explains Dr Maryam Zamani in Woman & Home.

"It’s been shown to support cell turnover and boost collagen production, while reducing oiliness and refining the appearance of pores," adds the expert.

It’s important to apply it in the right way – and at the right time – to avoid any side effects. For instance, facialist Mariam Abbas explains that you should start using retinol very gently and "increase the frequency very slowly".

Start by using it just two nights a week and then "gradually increase the frequency over three to four weeks". Eventually you can work up to using it "every night or every other night".

Keen to give it a go? Dr Catriona Maybury recommends applying retinol at night after cleansing your face. First, "apply a thin layer of your moisturiser to your face and neck", then apply the retinol. Wait a couple of minutes and add another layer of moisturiser on top.  This is a method that "doesn’t affect the potency of your retinol and has been shown to help reduce side effects such as dryness or flakiness".

Abbas also stresses the importance of starting slowly with a low, gentle strength. She adds that anyone with a skin condition or very sensitive skin should avoid using retinol. Finally, she notes that "retinol should not be used by women who are pregnant".
