It's easy to mistake a cold for seasonal allergies. They can cause similar symptoms, like sneezing, but of course, there are differences. To help you better tell them apart — and get more effective treatment — Mirror reports that pharmacist Claire Nevinson shared what sets the two (annoying) issues apart.

According to the expert, first off, the two conditions "are caused by different things." Colds are "caused by a virus which is passed on from an infected person to another person." Seasonal allergies, on the other hand, aren't contagious and are the result of "a reaction some people have to pollen," she added.

Paying attention to certain patterns when your symptoms arise can help you tell the difference. For instance, with allergies, "symptoms usually appear during the pollen season and are worse when you go outdoors." It's important to note, though, that viruses still circulate during warmer months.

There are also differences in symptoms. For example, allergies "don't cause a fever and most people don't feel unwell," she explained. You might also consider the duration of your symptoms because "a cold usually lasts for one to two weeks," whereas typically, allergy symptoms "can last for weeks or even months, depending on the pollen count," she added. "The higher the pollen count, the worse your symptoms will be."

Both colds and allergies can cause a runny nose and sneezing. They can also lead to fatigue and tiredness, but additionally, allergies manifest with other symptoms like itchy eyes. And in some cases, allergies are linked to a feeling of breathlessness, especially in people with asthma.
