You don't have to join a gym to get exercise. There are many forms of physical activity. Some household chores count, but does gardening help you burn calories? Kieran Sheridan, a physiotherapist, quoted in the Mirror, explains that it all depends on the type of work you're doing in the garden. 

However, he also cites the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as saying that "you can burn around 300 calories in just 45 minutes of gardening".

More specifically, "an hour of planting can burn between 200 and 300 calories". He also explains that more intensive gardening activities, such as planting, watering, digging and lifting bags of compost, tend to work multiple muscle groups at once.

Of course, before you start working in the garden, you should "warm up to build strength, avoid cramps and muscle strain after gardening".
