"Electricians are working in shifts. In the shift that started at 7:00 am, we have so far [10:00 am] a 98% adherence. We are talking about around 100 workers", Nuno Almeida told Lusa, adding that the maintenance services of buildings and public lighting in the city, which is not being done, are being affected.

According to the union leader, the workers are today carrying out a 24-hour strike to demand receiving the unhealthiness and hardship supplement.

"Since 10:00 am, the workers have been gathered at the Lisbon City Hall and were planning to intervene in the council meeting scheduled for this afternoon to demand that the municipal executive respond to the workers' fair claim, but it was postponed to 8 May", he said.

Lusa asked the local authority about the adherence to the strike, and is still awaiting a response.

"For many years, the workers have been fighting for the fair and pertinent allocation of the unhealthiness and hardship supplement, supporting their claim on the fact that they very often carry out work in contexts of unhealthiness, hardship or risk, which potentially affect their health and physical integrity", said the representative.

According to the union, the around 100 workers have been demanding the right to receive the subsidy from the local authority.

STML, added Nuno Almeida, has already made several proposals to Carlos Moedas' executive (PSD), but the negotiation process has been suspended since January.

Asked by Lusa on Monday, Lisbon City Hall only responded that it is "keeping the dialogue with STML open".

In November last year, the electricians gathered in Praça do Município to deliver a petition to the executive president, in which they demanded the allocation of the supplement.

At that time, according to the union, Carlos Moedas assumed the desire to resolve the matter.

In the most recent meeting with the council executive, on 30 January, the deputy mayor, Filipe Anacoreta Correia, asked STML to legally substantiate the request, which the union did.

"In the meantime, we and the workers have not obtained any response", indicated Nuno Almeida, explaining that this led to the decision to "proceed with the strike".
