The 42-year-old, who played for Manchester United and Sunderland, has been in temporary charge since February when Stephen Kenny left after failing to qualify for the upcoming European Championship.

John O'Shea, who was already assistant manager, was initially placed in caretaker charge until April, but the FAI announced on Thursday that the former centre-back will remain in post through June, when Ireland face Portugal and also have a friendly against Hungary.

O'Shea has been involved with the FAI since 2020, working in various coaching roles, and is a former Republic of Ireland international with 119 caps.

Portugal vs Republic of Ireland is scheduled for June 11 in Aveiro and will be Portugal's final warm-up game before Euro 2024, which begins in Germany on June 14.

In qualifying, the Republic of Ireland finished fourth in Group B, winning only twice and collecting six points, both against Gibraltar.
