Controversial campaign leaves new record in sight in FC Porto elections

FC Porto's election turnout record is likely to be broken on Saturday, reflecting weeks of tense campaigning between Pinto da Costa, André Villas-Boas and Nuno Lobo, worsened by the national football runner-up's poor phase.

Between 09:00 and 20:00, at Estádio do Dragão, in Porto, the club members will elect the social bodies for the 2024-2028 four-year period, which, as in the last election, in 2020, brings together two opponents to a 16th consecutive term of the current president Pinto da Costa.

If the businessman and teacher Nuno Lobo (list C) is a re-candidate, the former coach André Villas-Boas (B), who achieved four successes for FC Porto's football team in 2010/11, including the championship and the Europa League, is running for the first time and emerges as the main face of an unprecedented contestation against Pinto da Costa (A), with whom he has been exchanging accusations and criticisms until today, the last day of the campaign admitted in the electoral regulation.

Successor of Américo de Sá since April 17, 1982, the 33rd supreme leader in the club's history, aged 86, was re-elected several times in isolation, with the exception of three times, starting in 1988 and 1991, when he defeated the doctor José Martins Soares, with the first of these victories calling more than 10,700 voters to the polls, a record never surpassed.

The 68.65% of votes added four years ago allowed him to beat the lawyer José Fernando Rio (26.44%) and Nuno Lobo (4.91%), in an electoral act spread over two days, but they were the lowest percentage among the 15 electoral victories of Pinto da Costa in his 'reign'.

Never has the sporting, financial and even infrastructural management of the leader with the most titles and longevity in world football been so contested, at a time when FC Porto is already far from the national champion title and almost out of the next Champions League, being third placed in the I League four rounds from the end, with the same 62 points as Sporting de Braga, 18 behind the outstanding leader Sporting and 11 behind Benfica, the holder of the scepter.

The only chance of winning trophies this season is the Portuguese Cup final, on May 26, when the winners of the last two editions of the competition will face Sporting, at the Estádio Nacional, in Oeiras, exactly two weeks after the deadline for the inauguration of the new elected bodies and about a month after the polls.

José Lourenço Pinto tries to be re-elected to the head of the General Assembly Table (MAG) by Pinto da Costa's list, who nominated Ricardo Valente, councilor of the Porto City Council, to replace Jorge Guimarães in the Fiscal and Disciplinary Council (CFD) and Américo Aguiar, cardinal and bishop of Setúbal, as the first candidate for the Superior Council (CS).

André Villas-Boas, 46, presented António Tavares, provider of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto and former PSD deputy to the Assembly of the Republic, for the MAG, while the economist Angelino Ferreira, who was financial administrator of FC Porto's SAD and vice-president of the club, is running for the CFD and Fernando Freire de Sousa, leader of the General Council of the University of Porto and former Secretary of State, is running for the CS.

Nuno Lobo, 54, proposes the lawyer Luís Barradas and the manager Heleno Roseira for the MAG and the CFD, respectively, having given up competing for the CS, the club's advisory body, which is elected by the Hondt method and once again has an autonomous movement led by the lawyer and university professor Miguel Brás da Cunha (list D).

Estádio do Dragão will make 44 polling stations available to members, who are entitled to only one vote, unlike the electoral differentiation observed in rivals Benfica and Sporting, depending on seniority and, also in the Alvalade club, on the type of quota.

In addition to non-members, corresponding members, under 18 years of age, who have not yet paid their fees or who have a March quota to pay on Saturday, do not have active electoral capacity, and early voting, at a distance or by correspondence is not allowed.
