Vasileia Karachaliou out of the Portuguese qualifiers for Paris2024

"Vasileia's qualification was guaranteed in a competition in which it was possible to register through the international federation, but this qualification was conditional on obtaining Portuguese nationality by March, which was not possible", explained Marcos Alves.

Karachaliou, competing with a special license from World Sailing, had won the quota in ILCA 6 for Portugal at the 2023 World Championships in The Hague.

"For the last qualifying regatta [which is being held this week in Hyères, France], the condition for the athlete's registration would be to effectively have Portuguese nationality, which did not happen", added Marco Alves, indicating that Karachaliou's place was, in the meantime, reallocated to another country.

Thus, Portugal will be represented by Eduardo Marques (ILCA 7) and Diogo Costa and Carolina João (470) in the Paris2024 sailing events, which will be held in Marseille.

The Paris2024 Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11.
