Madeira's Marcos Freitas, 17th in the ITTF ranking, beat Aruna, 19th in the world and former Sporting player, by 4-0 (12-10, 11-9, 11-9 and 3-11), in 38 minutes, to finish the initial phase of the tournament with only victories.

Marcos Freitas had started the competition with a 4-0 victory over Daniel González (88th in the world ranking), from Puerto Rico, on Monday.

The Portuguese number one will now wait for the draw to know his opponent in the first round of the qualifiers.

Also today, Portuguese Fu Yu, 66th in the world ranking, was mathematically eliminated from the tournament, after the victory of the favorite Adriana Díaz, from Puerto Rico, number ten in the world, against the Egyptian Hana Goda (30th in the world), by 4-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-7 and 11-9).

Díaz finished the group with two victories, after having defeated the Portuguese player 3-1 on Monday. On Tuesday, Fu Yu, 45, had beaten Hana Goda, the 16-year-old African champion, by 3-1.

Each of the 32 groups had three players, who played each other once, with the winner of the group going to the qualifiers.

As for the other Portuguese players who participated in the tournament, Tiago Apolónia and João Geraldo had already been eliminated on Tuesday, after two defeats in as many group stage matches.

The 2024 ITTF Macau World Cup, which runs until April 21, brings together 96 players, including reigning world champion Fan Zhendong, ITTF ranking leader Wang Chuqin, and women's champion and ranking leader Sun Yingsha.

The tournament in the Chinese semi-autonomous region is back after a three-year hiatus caused by the covid-19 pandemic, with prize money totaling one million dollars (about 940 thousand euros).

The event counts towards the world ranking, which will determine the qualifiers for the Paris2024 Olympic Games, between July 26 and August 11.

In February, during the World Team Championships, the men's table tennis team, composed of Marcos Freitas, Tiago Apolónia, João Geraldo, Diogo Carvalho and João Monteiro, qualified for the Games.

In addition to the team berth, which will be composed of three players, Portugal has also secured the presence in the individual tournament of the two Portuguese players, those with the best world ranking on June 18.
