São Paulo went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Paraguayan Ángel Romero in the 22nd minute, and their task was made easier after 60 minutes when visiting player Rodrigo Arevalo, who had come on at half-time, was sent off.

Against 10 men, the hosts ran riot, with Yuri Alberto making it 2-0 in the 64th minute, Romero getting his second in the 73rd and substitute Pedro Raul wrapping things up in the 89th.

After starting the competition with a 1-1 draw in Uruguay against Racing Montevideo, Corinthians now lead the group with the same four points as the Uruguayans, who thrashed Argentinos Juniors 3-0 away with two goals from Tomas Veron and one from former Benfica player Jonathan Urretaviscaya.

In the next round, the team managed by António Oliveira, the son of former Benfica player and coach Toni, will travel to face the Argentines, who have one point, in a Group F where Nacional Asunción remain on zero points.
