"A year after the tribute paid to the unique personality of Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão, on the occasion of the centenary of her birth, Figueira da Foz once again welcomes a recital by the pianist from Lisbon, in which she interprets water as refuge and overcoming and the emotions of the body that dances and survives", the organisation highlighted, in a press release sent to the Lusa agency.

The pianist Teresa da Palma Pereira will take to the stage of the Madalena Biscaia Perdigão Auditorium at 5 pm on Sunday, to present compositions from the 19th century, by Liszt, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Albéniz and Rimsky-Korsakov.

According to the organisation, the pianist's programme is divided into two acts: the first linked to Romanticism, with compositions by Chopin and Liszt; and a second part inspired by dance, with compositions from the Russian ballet by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, and from the Spanish Albéniz, linked to flamenco.

"It is as if the audience were seeing two recitals in one", said Teresa da Palma Pereira.

The recital begins with Consolation no. 1 by Liszt, "in a brief moment of pure expression and improvisation, contained and wordless emotion".

This is followed by Liszt's work from the first notebook of 'Les Années de Pélegrinage', with a composition that reflects refuge in water and its deep sounds, continuing with the aquatic contours in Chopin's Nocturnes.

"Being one of the piano works most loved by the public, the fluidity, the constancy and the smoothness of a left hand built on a pattern that is continuously repeated, supports the lyricism and the intimate expressiveness of the right hand, in a rhythm that resembles that of water", said the pianist.

The first part of the recital returns to Liszt, again with the link between water and the desire to overcome the limitations and obstacles of the human world, the waters sometimes calm and sometimes dark and agitated and the sacred, in the 'Legend of Saint Francis of Paola Walking on the Waves'.

"The second part of the recital continues with a pictorial aesthetic, but the pieces evoke the colour of the songs and dances of Andalusia, with the 'Rumours of the cove' and 'Malagueña' by Albéniz, both reminiscent of the flamenco sound of the maritime city of Málaga", indicated Teresa da Palma Pereira.

This is followed by Tchaikovsky, with two excerpts from two of his most famous works: the 'Pas de Deux', from 'The Nutcracker', and the 'Adagio', from 'Sleeping Beauty'.

The programme culminates with the final movement of the suite Scheherazade op. 35 by Rimsky-Korsakov, transcribed for piano by Paul Gilson.

"This piece stands out for its assumed symphonic grandeur and its characteristic tarantella rhythm. In the agitation of the waters, the overcoming of Scheherazade is expressed, who after all survives by the also vital force of her stories and the emotions that she arouses", considered the pianist.

Teresa da Palma Pereira is an award-winning pianist in Portugal and abroad, having come first in the Maria Campina International Competition, and obtained second place and a special mention from the jury in the Princess Lalla Meryem International Competition.

She won the prize from the Koninklijk Conservatorium, in Brussels, which allowed her to perform as a soloist with the Brussels Chamber Orchestra.

She has five CDs released and is currently the artistic director of the Flor da Murta Music Academy, based in Paço de Arcos, and, since 2018, of the Oeiras International Piano Festival.
