"I found a sign of April and a sign of democracy" the decoration of António Spínola with the great necklace of the Order of Liberty, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to journalists, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the National Museum of Resistance and Liberty, in Peniche.

The President of the Republic clarified that he asked the Association of April 25th for the list of the 'Captains of April', which includes names of "very different people who were united at that time and then disunited in very different ways and there were times when there were ruptures".

Spínola, who came to integrate the National Salvation Board, the body that assumed the leadership of the country after the revolution of April 25th, 1974, "broke in September 74 and acted against what he thought was the course of the revolution", expressing his disagreement.

Therefore, in the 1976 elections, several candidates emerged, one of them being the April military Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho.

In the decoration ceremony, held in the summer, it was "a sign of pacification" to have descendants of General Spínola, Marshal Costa Gomes and Admiral Rosa Coutinho sitting side by side, still with "opposing positions".

The historian Fernando Rosas, who was part of the commission responsible for the selection of the museum's contents, once again demonstrated his "indignation" with the decoration, which he said was an "insult".
