The Portuguese ambassador to Canada, António Leão Rocha, considered that the Portuguese have contributed to the development of that country, although often "too discreetly", not realizing "the strength and impact they have" on Canadian society.

"Sometimes we are a little too discreet and sometimes in Canadian society in general the strength and the impact that it has is not perceived. I have been observing, we have prominent Portuguese people in all kinds of professions, of activities, from politics, artists, culture, economy, jurists, judges, two high positions in the Bank of Canada", affirmed the diplomat.

The ambassador was speaking on Thursday night, at his official residence, in Ottawa, at a ceremony to award the Order of Camões to Elder Marques, former chief advisor to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which also marked the fiftieth anniversary of April 25, 1974.

"Our community has almost 500 thousand people, it is an important community in the context of Canada. When the President of the Republic of Portugal visited Canada, in September 2023, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recognized several times the importance of the meaning and the integration of the Portuguese community in Canada and the contribution that it makes", he praised.

However, António Manuel Leão Rocha also recognized that sometimes "it is good that the communities are less discreet and more exuberant", which is the way of being of the Portuguese-Canadians.

Lawyer Elder Marques, former chief advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, was now awarded the Order of Camões.

"On a personal level it is an honor and I am grateful, on the other hand it makes me think about the Portuguese-Canadian community and the important role that this community plays in Canada, in the national life of Canada, in the construction of the country, it does not always have the recognition that it deserves outside of Canada, which I think it deserves", he declared to Lusa.

Despite his parents having arrived in Canada before April 25, 1974, to start a new life "they educated their children to be proud of the culture and connection with Portugal", he said.

Elder Marques held, between 2015 and 2020, several important positions in the Canadian Government, from the Prime Minister's office, to the ministries of finance and innovation.

"Politics is difficult, it is a family sacrifice, these days it was a very complicated environment, with sometimes personal attacks, but the opportunity to participate in the political life of Canada is unique and important, I was very lucky to have this opportunity", he recognized.

According to the 2021 census, around 450 thousand people of Portuguese origin live in Canada.
