On April 23, the Public Security Police (PSP) of Lisbon, arrested two men aged 49 and 50, for being suspected of a crime of domestic violence against their mother.
The men, brothers, residents of Oeiras, physically assaulted their mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease.
According to a PSP statement, the brothers were responsible for their mother. During the day she was in a day centre and at night she returned home and was cared for by her two sons.
However, instead of providing the care they should have, "the suspects carried out several physical assaults, leaving her with marks all over her body".
The brothers had already been made defendants and questioned for the same crime, but they continued with the assaults, "causing more bruising to their mother, without her being able to understand the reason due to the illness she suffers from".
In view of the assaults and her vulnerability, Arrest Warrants were requested Outside of Flagrante Delicto from the Judicial Authority so that they could be subject to coercive measures.
The victim's full-time stay at the day centre was also safeguarded so that she could receive all the care she needs.
After the aforementioned arrest warrants were served, the PSP also states that the detainees were brought before the competent Judicial Authority and, at the 1st Judicial Interrogation, they were subject to the coercive measure of preventive detention.
