The President of the Republic highlights that poverty is an inheritance of the dictatorship and that the "greatest failure" of the 25th of April is still not having managed to resolve it.
"There is a hard core of poverty. A part of it comes almost from the beginning of the 25th of April, passed from generation to generation, it was much larger, but it still remains. It is between 1.7 million and 2 million, a little bit above, a little bit below", he begins by saying, in an excerpt from an interview with RTP, which will be broadcast in full on Wednesday night.
According to Marcelo, the poverty of today "has nothing to do with what poverty was like in other times, but in terms of international rankings, it pulls the country down and corresponds to ageing".
"The population has aged a lot and not only has it not reversed, but it has not recovered", he concludes.
It is worth remembering that during today, a conversation between the President and foreign journalists was made public, in which he revealed that he has broken off relations with his son, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, one of those targeted in the controversial case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who received millionaire treatment at the Hospital de Santa Maria. However, taking into account that the interview will be pre-recorded, it is not expected that the subject will be addressed.
