"In these 50 years, with the adhesion to the European Union, the modernization of the country, in terms of transportation, went through a bet on road infrastructures: starting from 1997, the growth of the highway network accelerates and, currently, there are more km of highways than railroads", concluded the statistical database of the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, in the portrait of the country entitled "50 years of Democracy in numbers" and published on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Revolution of April 25, 1974.

In the work authored by Ricardo Garcia and Ana Serra, Pordata illustrates the changes that have occurred in the country, especially in terms of demographics, profile of the population in general and families in particular, modernization in transportation, in access to healthcare and education, in the world of work and social protection, or in the living conditions of the Portuguese.

Regarding transportation, the analysis highlights that, in 1974, there were 66 km of highways and, in 2022, the country had 3,115 km.

As for the railroad, in the year of the Carnation Revolution there were more than 3,563 km of railroad lines in operation.

In half a century, 29% of the railroad lines were deactivated, especially in the interior of continental Portugal, dropping to a total of 2,527 km in 2022.

In turn, air transportation had a substantial increase, with 36,000 landings having been made in 1974, with 4.6 million passengers, in Portuguese airports.

In 2022, those values rose to 218,000 landings and 56.8 million passengers, an increase that is also due to the increase in tourist demand.

Between 1974 and 2022, the record of the number of overnight stays by tourists in Portugal grew from 9.4 million to 69.7 million, pointed out Pordata.
