"I think it is essential to maintain an executive management of the National Health Service but reviewing its competences", the president of the Ordem dos Médicos told Lusa, regarding the resignation of the DE-SNS.

The executive director of the National Health Service announced today that he will present his resignation, together with his team, to the Minister of Health, claiming that he does not want to be an obstacle to the Government in the policies and measures it deems necessary.

"Respecting the principle of institutional loyalty, I will present to the Minister of Health, together with the team I lead, the request for resignation from the position of executive director of the National Health Service", announced Fernando Araújo in a statement.

Heard by Lusa, the president highlighted what he considered to be the merit, the work capacity and the dedication of Fernando Araújo to the cause of Health and the NHS, but added that it was visible that there were different visions between Fernando Araújo and the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, on the path to follow in the National Health Service, namely in relation to the Local Health Units.

Carlos Cortes considered it essential to maintain a DE-SNS but defended that the competences should be reviewed, because in the previous government, he said, there was a kind of "two-headed leadership", because Fernando Araújo had competences that should belong to the Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro.

"The minister must have the capacity to make decisions about the National Health Service" and the DE-SNS the capacity to implement them, defended the president of the Ordem dos Médicos.
