Architects want a salary of 1,300 euros when entering the profession
SINTARQ - the Architecture Workers' Union - today called all professionals to discuss and approve the first salary tables for the architecture sector, namely the proposal of 1,300 euros as the starting salary for the profession.

At the plenary session, scheduled for May 1, at 10:00 am, at the SINTARQ headquarters in Porto, the conclusions of a national survey on professional expectations will be discussed. The survey was conducted in late 2023 and had a large number of respondents. The respondents demanded a starting salary of 1300 euros, a reduction in working hours to 35 hours per week, better compensation and more restrictions for overtime, and the establishment of careers as a central instrument for raising salaries and combating discrimination and harassment.
In a statement, SINTARQ emphasizes that "for example, 94% of respondents advocate for a weekly workload of up to 35 hours, the median salary expectation for a worker with five to ten years of experience is 1800 euros, and 80% of respondents declare that they work overtime, half of whom do not receive any compensation for it".
According to preliminary data from this study, "an architecture worker is deprived of at least 500 to 800 euros per year in unpaid overtime," claims the union, which was founded in April 2022.
"This survey allowed us to assess the professional expectations of those who work in architecture and to confirm, once again, the picture of precariousness and indignity that is prevalent in the sector," it says.
The list of demands that will be submitted for discussion proposes two salary tables: one for designers and another for specialized technicians, divided into professional careers of assistant, junior, and senior.
According to SINTARQ, the progression takes into account years of experience or the functions effectively performed, regardless of seniority.
The criteria that determine this progression and that will serve to counteract the transversal stagnation of careers will also be discussed on May 1.
In addition to salaries, careers, and working hours, the proposals include basic demands in other areas such as: parental rights, regulation of teleworking, vacation days, occupational health and safety guarantees, and certified professional training.
This meeting is the culmination of a process that lasted about a year and included ten open discussion meetings held in Braga, Coimbra, Porto, Lisbon, and Setúbal. The process will now end with this last national plenary session in Porto.
Registration for the plenary session is open on the SINTARQ website. All workers in the sector can participate, or workers from other professional sectors can attend as guests.
