A 63-year-old man died in the early hours of Tuesday morning following a fire in an apartment located in Vila Real de Santo António, in the Algarve.

A source from the Faro District Relief Operations Command (CDOS) revealed that the fire also left five people displaced.

According to the Lusa news agency, the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) is investigating the incident. For now, the causes of the fire are still unknown.

Speaking to Lusa, the mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, Álvaro Araújo, said that the local authority had offered accommodation to the five displaced people, but they had refused.

"There are five people who refused the accommodation offered by the municipality and stayed at a relative's house," he stressed.

According to Álvaro Araújo, the victim was from Vila Real de Santo António and "known to everyone", but did not live in that apartment but rather in the Hortas area.

"The information I have, which has not yet been confirmed, is that the person did not live in that house and, for that reason, it is strange that he appeared there," he said.

The fire alert was given at 1:23 am. At the scene were 23 personnel and 11 vehicles from the Public Security Police (PSP), the Vila Real and Castro Marim Fire Departments, INEM, PJ, Municipal Civil Protection and the company e-Redes.
