Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, who asked him about the opinion expressed by António Costa that "the occasion made the decision" for the President to end the legislature at the end of last year, as the right wing intended.

"That is true. There was a process that we did not expect - without it there would have been no dissolution. There was a resignation that we did not expect, of the Prime Minister and PS Secretary-General - without it we would not have had the dissolution", replied the Head of State.

"It was the sum of these two realities that really led to the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic", he added.

According to the President of the Republic, the dissolution "was an old dream of the Portuguese right wing, since 2016, but it only came to fruition because there were these two occasions that added up: a process that no one expected or imagined and the resignation of the Prime Minister and PS Secretary-General".

António Costa wrote about the events of November last year in the preface to a book by the former president of the PS parliamentary bench Eurico Brilhante Dias, entitled "Palavras escritas" (Written Words).

"The truth is that we reached the end of this Legislature prematurely by decision of the President of the Republic. The occasion made the decision, but since October 2022 the right wing has been in a frenzy in search of a pretext for dissolution", argued the former Prime Minister.
