Metsola calls for defence of democracy against "Russian disinformation"
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, warned today in Lisbon about the importance of defending democracy in the face of "Russia's disinformation campaigns" and the strengthening of pro-Kremlin support, ahead of the European elections in June.

Roberta Metsola stressed the need to vote "at a time when there are fewer people living in democracy than outside it".
"It is our collective responsibility to safeguard democracy," she said.
The President of the European Parliament said she was "fully aware of the difficulties" of the voting date in Portugal -- 9 June, the eve of the national holiday of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities. In the European Union (EU), the elections will take place between 6 and 9 June.
Portuguese voters will be able to vote a week earlier and, on the day itself, also on the move, the Prime Minister confirmed today.
"I am confident that we can count on all the institutions of Portugal to continue playing a proactive role in raising awareness among citizens about the elections, and I can assure you that all Portuguese MEPs will also do their part," said Metsola, indicating that she addressed the importance of voting in the elections in the meetings she had today with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and with the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.
The leader of the European Parliament invoked the 50th anniversary of 25 April as "the ideal time to reflect on the benefits of European integration and to assess decades of European cooperation".
"It will be a moment to speak on behalf of Europe to encourage people to vote, because just as the European Union has helped to transform Portugal, Portugal has transformed the European Union and will continue to do so for the better," she said.
Metsola congratulated Luís Montenegro on the appointment of five former MEPs to the executive of the Democratic Alliance: Paulo Rangel, as Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Fernandes, as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Maria da Graça Carvalho, as Minister of the Environment and Energy, Nuno Melo, as Minister of National Defence, and Cláudia Aguiar, as Secretary of State for Fisheries.
"Our loss will be your gain. There is no better guarantee of a strong agenda for the future and of defending our common project of freedom, democracy and rights. This requires a truly strong Portugal and a strong Europe," she commented.
