The quake, which the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured as a magnitude 6.1, was felt as far away as the country’s capital, Jakarta, where buildings were evacuated, and in the city of Bandung.

"I shouted to my wife and children to get out of the house", Bandung resident Iman Krisnawan, 47, told AFP. "Usually quakes here last about five seconds but this one went on for between 10 and 15 seconds," he added.

There was no tsunami warning issued, according to Indonesia’s geophysics agency. The USGS put the quake’s depth at 68.3 kilometres (42.4 miles).

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide.

On 21 November 2022, a 5.6-magnitude quake killed 602 people in the densely populated West Java province on Java’s main island.

Indonesia’s deadliest earthquake, a 9.1-magnitude tremor off the coast of Sumatra on 26 December 2004, triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people as far away as Sri Lanka, India and Thailand and sent giant waves as high as 30 metres (100 feet) crashing into the Sumatran city of Banda Aceh.
