The Italian government has sent a military plane to the UK to fly a newborn baby to a hospital in Rome.

The move by the Italian authorities follows an appeal from the baby's parents, who said they had been told by the UK hospital that nothing more could be done to save her.

The identity of the baby has not been released, but Sky News understands the parents are of Italian and Nigerian nationality.

The Italian government said the baby has a "very serious heart condition" and intervened after Bristol Royal Hospital for Children said it was no longer able to provide treatment.

Italian lawyer and former senator Simone Pillon told Sky News the hospital had been on the brink of a legal challenge by the parents over the withdrawal of treatment, but this was paused ahead of a High Court hearing in order to co-operate with the Italian offer.

The MP said the agreement paves the way for children to receive treatment abroad without parents having to go to court, as has happened in previous cases.

"I believe that if we find a way to co-operate in the best interest of the children, everybody wins; there are no losers," he told Sky News.
