An egg donated by an elderly woman for the construction of a mosque in Baramulla in north Kashmir, India, was auctioned last week for more than 2,500 euros.
According to India.com, the elderly woman, who is poor, did not have the money to contribute to the construction of the mosque, so she offered the only thing she had: a common white chicken egg.
The gesture moved the organizers of the fundraising campaign, who decided to auction the egg, not only to give the donation its due value, but also to raise awareness of the project.
The auction aroused great interest in the city, not because of the value of the egg, but because of its symbolism.
Like the donation, the auction was carried out in an unusual way. Each time someone bought the egg, it was put up for auction again, until it reached around 2,500 euros.
The last buyer was Danish Ahmed, who paid the equivalent of 720,000 euros to keep the now-famous egg.
Speaking to India.com, the Indian man assured that he is not rich, but was moved by the elderly woman's gesture and wanted to contribute to the construction of the mosque.
"I am not a rich man, it was just my passion and my emotion for the sacred space," said Danish, who lives in the vicinity of Baramulla.
An egg donated by a poor man for the construction of a mosque in Sopore Kashmir has been auctioned for more than Rs 2 lakh.
