You May Be Allergic to Alcohol. Here Are the Warning Signs

Yes, "some people can be allergic or intolerant to certain ingredients found in alcoholic drinks," explains Dr. Emma Clinics, a physician, as quoted by the Mirror. It's a relatively common allergy and, in most cases, presents itself with skin reactions.

Signs you have an alcohol allergy:
- Flushing. Alcohol can cause your blood vessels to dilate, which can result in red, flushed skin. This usually happens on the face and neck. This reaction is usually due "to a genetic deficiency of an enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2)," she added. This "deficiency means you metabolise alcohol less efficiently, leading to the release of histamine, which causes this reaction";
- Hives. You may develop "raised, red, itchy bumps on your skin," she explains. This is usually caused by an "immune system response" to certain ingredients in alcoholic drinks;
- Contact dermatitis causes itchy, red skin. "This is almost always caused by coming into direct contact with certain alcohols";
- Swelling. Known in the medical world as angioedema, this causes your lips, face or throat to swell up after drinking alcohol.
