The indicator, released by the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics, also beat analysts' expectations, with the most common forecast pointing to a 0.1% year-on-year increase.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.1%, reversing the trend seen in March, when the indicator fell by 1%, the largest drop in three years.
Experts expected the CPI to increase by 0.5% compared to March.
Chinese cabinet statistician Dong Lijuan highlighted the "continuous recovery in consumer demand", while noting that core CPI - a measure that excludes food and energy prices due to volatility - rose 0.7% year-on-year.
The expert also pointed to the 2.7% drop in food prices and the 3.6% growth in energy prices.
This is the third consecutive month in which the year-on-year CPI has been in positive territory, after registering a four-month deflationary trend at the end of 2023 and the beginning of this year.
