In a statement, the Port of Aveiro clarified that the Liquid Bulk Terminal received, on April 18, the first of two trains of the new regular service for distributing biofuel, inaugurated by PRIO.

"This first railway service was completed the following day and consisted of a total of two trains loaded with 720 tons of biofuel each, produced from waste at the PRIO Novas Energias complex located in the Port of Aveiro", says the same note.

According to the Port of Aveiro, this new service will take place regularly, every month, and is in line with the joint efforts of PRIO and the Port of Aveiro to reduce the carbon footprint.

Quoted in the same note, the chairman of the board of directors of the Port of Aveiro, Eduardo Feio, highlighted the importance of the first commercial use of the set of lines of the Liquid Bulk Terminal of the Port of Aveiro for decarbonising transport, adding that "this first train allows 26 trucks to be removed from the road between the Port of Aveiro and Sines and their cargo to be transported on an electric train".

The official also pointed out that with this railway service, the Port of Aveiro will continue to strengthen its position as "a major multimodal logistics hub at European level".

For his part, Luís Nunes, director of Prio Supply, said that the company has sought to innovate and decarbonise at all stages of the supply chain, from the production phase to the delivery of the final product to customers.

"What we feel from the market is that there is an increase in demand for quality and more ecological fuels. It is a great sign that the market has given regarding the energy transition and PRIO has responded", he concluded.

Considered the largest producer of biofuels in Portugal and one of the largest European producers of biodiesel from residual raw materials, PRIO ensures the distribution of these biofuels through a network of more than 250 service stations from North to South of the country.

To ensure its competitiveness in liquid fuels and Autogas, PRIO operates an independent primary logistics and storage terminal in Aveiro, through which it can supply the international market. To ensure the supply of its biodiesel factory in the domestic market, PRIO coordinates the collection of used cooking oils and other residual raw materials at more than 600 collection points in Portugal.
