Airbus reported a 28% increase in first-quarter profit to 595 million euros ($637 million), helped by higher plane deliveries and production despite supply-chain strains, the company said Thursday.

Between January and March, the group delivered 142 commercial aircraft, against 127 in the same period of 2023, and generated revenues of 12.8 billion euros, an increase of 9%.

The situation of the European giant contrasts with that of its competitor Boeing, which once again recorded losses in the results obtained between January and March, and continues to have problems with the quality control of its production.

Airbus' results were achieved "in an operating environment that shows no signs of improving compared to the (...) last meeting", said the company's CEO.

"Geopolitical tensions and the supply chain continue", added Guillaume Faury, in the presentation of the results.

The supply chain has remained weakened since the covid-19 pandemic, and to this is added the increase in the prices of raw materials, the difficulties in accessing certain components and energy costs, which have limited the pace of production increase.

Airbus still maintains the goal of delivering 800 commercial aircraft in 2024, compared to 735 last year, still far from the 863 delivered to its customers in 2019, before the pandemic.

The aircraft manufacturer expects to produce 75 A320 family aircraft per month in 2026 and is "making progress" towards achieving this, according to Guillaume Faury. It delivered an average of 48 per month last year.

It also plans to increase production of the single-aisle A220 to 14 per month in 2026 and three to four long-haul A330s this year.

In a sign of confidence in the recovery of the 'widebody' aircraft market (with two aisles), which was already losing strength and was hit by the pandemic, the group today announced the ambition to produce 12 A350 aircraft per month in 2028, when it previously planned to manufacture 10 until 2026.

The aircraft, capable of carrying around 400 passengers over 15,000 kilometers, is increasingly becoming a "best-seller" for the European aircraft manufacturer, with 1,200 orders since it entered service ten years ago, in a segment historically dominated by Boeing.

In the first three months of the year, the A350 was responsible for 71 of the 137 orders received by the aircraft manufacturer. India's IndiGo, which last year placed the largest volume order in the history of civil aviation, with 500 A320 aircraft, today announced the purchase of 30 A350 aircraft, with purchase rights for 70 more aircraft.

On March 31, 2024, the order book was 8,626 aircraft, including 7,177 from the A320 family.
