According to a news item released today by Antena 1/Açores, the strike was called off on Tuesday, after "a principle of understanding" was reached in the last conciliation meeting between the union and the company's management.

In statements to the Lusa agency, the regional union leader Clarimundo Batista said that the lifting of the strike "will effectively take effect today".

The strike, which had been going on since 7 March, aimed to demand 15% salary increases for 1st class engine drivers, a value that the company's management considered financially "unbearable".

The unionist said that the result "met" the workers' demands, "but not in full, because in negotiations there are never 100% victories".

"The parties, among themselves, think it is acceptable and both parties recognise that this is the case. One had to meet the other, one gave in on one thing and the other on another", he said, without wanting to specify the result of the negotiations.

The demands met, he added, were the points that the union demanded, but "it may not have been the amount that was initially proposed".

"For our part, it is satisfactory and we consider this negotiation process closed", concluded Clarimundo Batista.

Lusa tried to get a reaction from the Atlânticoline board of directors, but without success.

The company transports almost half a million passengers and around 30,000 vehicles annually, especially between the so-called Triangle islands (Faial, Pico and São Jorge), where it operates all year round, using four vessels (two ships and two ferries).

According to the union, the company has around 200 workers, 54 of whom are linked to the maritime part of the operation.
