Portugal will be present with 23 companies and associations at the "largest and most important trade fair in the world" of technical textiles, in Germany, an increasingly "robust" participation that reflects the evolution of the sector.

"This participation is a reflection of the change and evolution that this sector has had, and of a major commitment to increasingly technical, more complex textiles, which has been made," António Braz Costa, general director of CITEVE, the Technological Centre for the Textile and Clothing Industries of Portugal, told Lusa.

"In the last 20 years there has been a major evolution, with a very strong position in the automotive sector, particularly in the car interior, in the personal protection sector, in the sports sector, and a set of other applications for technical textiles," he added.

Techtextil, which takes place in Frankfurt every two years, and starts on Tuesday, will host 23 companies and associations from the technical textiles subsector, a "truly eclectic" group of what is done in Portugal.

"If 20 years ago we had to convince four companies to go to Frankfurt to show what they did, the truth is that today the participation is much more robust," admitted António Braz Costa.

"At the moment there has been some stabilisation (...) trade fairs are no longer the only channel for presenting products to potential customers. There is a consolidation around this number," he said.

The covid-19 pandemic has broken a constant growth of Portuguese companies in this subsector at international trade fairs, but the general director of CITEVE believes that now, after this phase has been overcome, there will be growth again, "especially because there are more and more companies looking for business in this type of textile".

Germany is an important destination market for exports from the textile sector, and even more so for this subsector.

"Firstly because of the automotive sector, because Portugal works with many German brands (...) and then because Germany is simultaneously our biggest competitor and our biggest partner," he explained.

"The homologous technology centres in Germany, which are several, are our biggest partners worldwide for our research and development projects," he added.

Techtextil starts on 23 April and ends on 26 April. Integrated into the 20th edition of the event is the Techtextil Forum, a space that reflects on what drives the global textile industry and brings together international specialists for presentations and debates. Five CITEVE researchers stand out among the speakers.
