First openly gay player urges Premier League to do more: ‘It’s disgusting’

First openly gay player urges Premier League to do more: ‘It’s disgusting’

Josh Cavallo, the first openly gay professional footballer, has given a wide-ranging interview to the Mirror in which he has called on the Premier League to do more for the LGBTQIA+ cause.

The 24-year-old Adelaide United player was left disappointed by Sheffield United captain Anel Ahmedhodzic's decision not to wear the rainbow armband at the end of last year.

"It's disappointing. What I would say to them is it could be your brother. It could be your mum, dad, or brother going through this. To see them dismiss it is basically saying they are not included or accepted," he said.

"So it is quite hurtful. They don't realise the impact it can have on the LGBTQ+ community. It breaks my heart every time I see something like that. It is not OK. If you are a footballer, you have a responsibility.

"There are certain things you can't say on the pitch because you will get sent off. There are things you can't do in public as a professional athlete. So for me, to see that, it is disgusting. It is saying you don't want to be associated with a certain group of people."
