"Emotional, expressive". PS, BE, PCP and IL praise participation in the parade

The leaders of PS, BE, PCP and IL today praised the massive civic participation in the popular parade that marked the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974, in Lisbon, despite the distinct visions for the future of the country.

"It is a great sign, this massive participation of the Portuguese people in this parade is extraordinary, celebrating the 50 years of April 25th with a strength, an enthusiasm of those who do not want to go backwards, of those who will fight and combat any social, economic or cultural setback. The people are here to safeguard, to protect the values of April, our political democracy, but also our social and cultural democracy", defended the Secretary-General of the PS, Pedro Nuno Santos.

The socialist leader was speaking to journalists at the popular parade that marked the 50 years of April 25th, 1974, on Avenida da Liberdade, in Lisbon, where he joined several members of the Socialist Youth, no longer wearing the suit and tie he wore at the solemn commemorative ceremony in parliament, but keeping the carnation on his chest.

Pedro Nuno Santos expressed confidence that the PS will win the European elections in June and that it will win again in the legislative elections - "and it won't be long" - despite the "shift to the right", and stressed that citizens still "face many problems" in the welfare state, in public services or in housing.

"But it is the PS and the left in general that are best prepared to respond to these problems, not the right, it has never been the right. We govern for the majority of the people, the right for the minority", he criticized.

Further back, in the final stretch of the parade, as has been customary, a delegation from the Liberal Initiative also joined the popular demonstration, with Rui Rocha recalling that his party has been participating in this event since it was founded, "even when they tried to prevent us" from being there.

The liberal welcomed the citizen participation in the parade, considering it "a good sign".

"April 25th is a decisive date for freedom and, therefore, to see so many Portuguese people joining in a celebration, with different political views, with different visions for the country, who come together to celebrate this date that unites democrats and those who love freedom, that is fantastic", he defended.

Flanked by the former leader of the IL and current head of the list for the European elections, João Cotrim de Figueiredo, Rui Rocha asked that the participation in this afternoon's parade be reflected in the vote in June, hoping that there will also be a "huge turnout".

Contrary to Pedro Nuno Santos, Rui Rocha considered that it will still be a long time "until the Portuguese forget all the consequences of socialist governance".

On the left, the coordinator of the BE Mariana Mortágua, rejected the idea that this was a demonstration but rather "an occupation for freedom", speaking of a "whole country that took to the streets".

"There is a majority of people who take to the streets on the 50th anniversary and it is not just to celebrate April 25th, to mark a symbolic day, it is to mark a position: to say that in Portugal democracy is not negotiable, democracy is not at stake, there is a majority of people who support democracy, who defend democracy, who believe it is the best system for Portugal", she considered.

"I believe that today so many people took to the streets with their political and ideological differences, but to affirm this founding principle: of equality, freedom, justice and democracy", she said.

The Secretary-General of the PCP, Paulo Raimundo, also praised the "massive, expressive" and even "emotional participation" shown by the citizens, classifying it as "a great affirmation of April".

The communist warned that problems still remain in access to health, education and housing.

"There is here an affirmation of April and, at the same time, a demand that April be fulfilled in people's lives", he said.

A small delegation from the Social Democratic Youth (JSD) also participated in the parade, led by its leader, MP Alexandre Poço, and with the participation of former MP André Coelho Lima and other current MPs.
