The president of Angola, João Lourenço, met with his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Belém Palace.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, received, this Friday, his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço.

The meeting took place at the Palácio de Belém, in Lisbon, and was also attended by the first lady of Angola, Ana Dias Lourenço.

"The President of the Republic received, at the Palácio de Belém, the president of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, and his wife, who is visiting Portugal on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of April 25", reads a note published on the website of the Presidency.

The meeting took place after a commemorative session of April 25, which took place on Thursday at the CCB and was attended not only by João Lourenço, but also by other heads of state of African countries. Upon arrival at the venue, about ten people protested against the presence of João Lourenço at what is "the festival of democracy", pointing out that he was an "anti-democrat".

During the session, in which the various heads of state spoke, João Lourenço was the first to speak, having considered that the Carnation Revolution "put an end to more than 40 years of Salazarist dictatorship, responsible for the oppression not only of the Portuguese people, but also of the then Portuguese colonies".

"We recognize the courage and heroism of the Captains of April and Portuguese resisters who fought by all means against the dictatorship, facing the oppressive machine of the regime, the PIDE/DGS and its appendages, which did not hesitate to torture and kill the best sons of this land", also stressed the Angolan president, pointing out that at the time the cause of Angola was indeed that of the Portuguese people: "Together we fought and together we defeated the same enemy: colonialism and the fascist dictatorship of Salazar and Caetano".
