"Kami Rita summited this morning. He has set a new record of 29 Everest ascents," said Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks.

A mountain guide for more than two decades, Kami Rita Sherpa first reached the 8,849-metre (29,032-foot) summit of Everest in 1994.

He has since climbed the world's highest mountain nearly every year, leading clients to the top.

"Back to the top of the world for the 29th time... One man's work, another man's, or woman's dream," the 54-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Last year, he twice summitted Everest, each time breaking his own record, after being overtaken by another guide, Pasang Dawa Sherpa.

The Nepali climber has summitted all 14 of the world's peaks over 8,000 metres, including K2 in Pakistan, the world's second-highest mountain.

Nepal this year has issued 414 permits to climb Everest during the spring climbing season, which runs from April to early June.

Most climbers go with a Nepali guide. More than 800 people are expected to attempt Everest in the coming weeks, after a first group of mostly Nepali climbers set off on Friday.

Eight of the world's 10 highest mountains are in Nepal, which welcomes hundreds of adventure seekers each spring when conditions are most favourable.

In 2023, more than 600 climbers reached the summit of Everest, with a record 18 fatalities.
