"We are going to assess the candidate's profile (...). We are open to receiving internal applications and, depending on their willingness, the interested parties will be scrutinized", said the president of the MDM National Council, Casimiro Beto, on the sidelines of the party's registration for the scrutiny of the general elections - including the presidential elections - of October 9, with the National Elections Commission (CNE).

In addition to the candidates' profile, the MDM should also discuss the party's activity plan for this year, in view of the October elections, assess the report of the general secretariat and the party's economic report, said Casimiro Beto.

At least nine political parties have already registered with the CNE for this year's general elections, in a process that started on April 22 and ends on May 7.

The parties Povo Otimista para o Desenvolvimento de Moçambique (Podemos) and the Partido Ecologista de Moçambique (Pemo) registered on April 22. The remaining seven parties registered today: Partido Humanitário de Moçambique (PAHUMO), Movimento de Reconciliação de Moçambique (MRM), Movimento Patriótico para a Democracia (MPD), Movimento Nacional Para Recuperação Da Unidade Moçambicana (Monarumo), Partido Nacional de Moçambique - Centro de Reflexão Democrática (PANAMO/CRD), Partido de Justiça Democrática de Moçambique (PJDM) and Movimento Democrático de Moçambique (MDM), the latter being the first parliamentary party to appear at the CNE.

Mozambique holds general elections on October 9, including presidential elections, which the current President of the Republic and leader of the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (Frelimo), Filipe Nyusi, is no longer running for, having reached the limit of two terms provided for in the Constitution.

The vote also includes legislative elections and elections for provincial governors and their respective provincial assemblies.
