Al-Hayya told The Associated Press (AP), as a cease-fire in Gaza remained elusive.

Israel said it would destroy Hamas after the October 7 attacks that triggered the war.

The government opposes the creation of an independent Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"All those who fought against the occupiers, when they became independent and got their rights ... they turned into political parties and their fighting and defense forces turned into the national army," he said.

Israel has not yet responded to the comments.

The Palestinian Authority hopes to establish an independent state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza, a solution that has been backed by the international community.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government rejects it.

The Gaza war began almost seven months ago after an attack in southern Israel in which Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people and took 250 hostage.

Israeli airstrikes and a ground offensive in Gaza have killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials.
