"In an increasingly globalized and interdependent world, together we must seek to respond to the challenges of our time. We are interested in the possibility of cooperation that can open up to us within the framework of the specialized organizations of the United Nations, and also in the context of the CPLP we seek to deepen relations with dialogue and cooperation, considering the values, concerns and interests that we share together," said Nazim Ahmad.

The representative of the Ismaili Imamat in Portugal, the entity that represents the Ismailis, spoke at the meeting that brought together the heads of state of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, São Tomé and Príncipe, Carlos Vila Nova, and Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, at the Diwan (world headquarters of the Ismaili Imamat).

The presidents of the former Portuguese colonies are in Portugal to participate in the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of April 25.

Also present at the meeting were Princes Rahim Aga Khan and Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar Branco, and the head of Portuguese diplomacy, Paulo Rangel, among other guests.

The meeting aimed to celebrate the relations between the Ismaili Imamat and the Lusophone world.

"The range of collaboration and cooperation that we can explore and develop is great, and in our view enriching for both parties," stressed Nazim Ahmad.

At the beginning of his speech, Nazim Ahmad highlighted the "fraternal ties with the global Lusophone community" and stressed that the meeting at the Diwan "is taking place when Portugal is celebrating 50 years of the April 25 revolution, which restored democracy and returned to the Portuguese the freedom they had lost for more than half a century.".

Addressing the presidents of the Lusophone countries, he considered that April 25 "also opened the doors to decolonization after a long, courageous and determined struggle by the peoples of the then former colonies to exercise their right and determination."

"It was, therefore, a day that happily and drastically changed their destinies, giving them the opportunity to freely shape their future and choose their path towards economic and social development and progress," he added.
