The public prosecutor's office confirmed to the German press that it has instituted preliminary proceedings against Krah to examine whether there are grounds for the suspicion of bribes by one or both states and thus subsequently open a judicial process, for which the European Parliament would first have to waive his immunity.

The investigations are related to an aide to Krah who was arrested on Monday on charges of serving as an agent of Chinese espionage after allegedly providing Beijing with information on Chinese dissidents and on matters related to the European Parliament.

Krah himself, who has denied all the accusations, is vice-president of the EU-China Friendship Group and voted against the motions critical of Beijing.

In the meantime, Krah and his deputy, Petr Bystrom, have been implicated for weeks in allegations that they received payments from an internet portal linked to an oligarch close to the Kremlin, in exchange for the dissemination of pro-Russian positions.

Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, leaders of the AfD, decided today not to withdraw their support for Krah as the lead candidate in the European elections in June, but asked for limitations on public appearances and on social networks.

It was reported that Krah decided "not to participate in the campaign launch in Donaueschingen, so as not to harm the campaign and the party's reputation", in reference to the far-right initiative scheduled for Saturday.

According to the latest polls on the June elections, the main favourites are the Christian Democrats (29%), while the AfD and the Social Democrats of Chancellor Olaf Scholz are practically tied with 16%.
