Torrential rains have lashed Guangdong province since Thursday, swelling rivers in the Pearl River Delta and triggering landslides in mountainous areas. State broadcaster CCTV said the downpours had caused landslides in six villages near the northern city of Jiangmen, leaving people trapped. No deaths have been reported so far and the total number of people affected is unclear, but CCTV said six people had been "trapped and injured" by the landslides and airlifted to the neighbouring city of Shaoguan. Weather warnings are in place across the province, with the meteorological bureau warning of heavy storms in coastal areas overnight and into Monday. Aerial footage released by CCTV showed submerged buildings and a pagoda poking out of the floodwaters. Many schools have already suspended classes for Monday, according to China's state radio. Citing the provincial hydrology service, CCTV said three locations along the Bei River "will experience once-in-a-century floods" due to the "impact of heavy rainfall". Parts of neighbouring Jiangxi and Fujian provinces are also expected to be hit by the storms. Climate change driven by greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events more frequent and more intense, and China is the world's biggest emitter of these gases.
