Tens of thousands of people protested in major Colombian cities on Saturday against the leftist government of Gustavo Petro, whose popularity has hit an all-time low after 20 months in power.

Protesters marched against several government reforms on Thursday, including a plan to nationalize health services, but also against the violence that continues despite peace talks with armed groups.

"I voted for change, for Petro, but we continue in the same situation. I'm marching because I think that Colombia still has hope and because I love my country," said Martha Estrada, a 64-year-old pensioner who joined the protests in Bogotá, according to the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Despite the rain that fell on the capital on Thursday, tens of thousands of protesters made their way to Plaza Bolívar, next to the presidential palace, AFP added.

In Cali (southwest), Medellín (northwest), Barranquilla (north), Bucaramanga (northeast) and other cities, protesters gathered with Colombian flags, white T-shirts and a unanimous cry: "Petro out!"

One of his proposed reforms, healthcare, has divided the country, as Petro has begun to implement several administrative measures despite struggling to gain support in Congress.

The president wants to reduce the role of the private sector in providing healthcare and in recent days has intervened in several entities that act as intermediaries between the state and hospitals, in order to control their budgets.

Experts agree that the health system is bankrupt and in need of reform, but some question the way the government is going about it.

Gustavo Petro came to power in August 2022, becoming the first leftist to govern a country traditionally run by conservative elites.

With a 60% disapproval rating, according to the latest polls, the president has lost support from political forces in Congress and on the streets.
