The two teenagers, aged 14 and 15, suspected of beating a 22-year-old man to death in the early hours of Tuesday, in Grande-Synthe, northern France, were charged with murder and remanded in custody.

According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, which quotes the Dunkirk prosecutor, Charlotte Huet, the suspects were remanded in custody while the investigation is ongoing.

Apparently, the 22-year-old, identified as Philippe Coopman, was the victim of an ambush to be robbed, believing he was going to meet a "girl" he had met on a dating app.

At a press conference, Huet explained that the defendants did not know the victim, but "verified that the person was indeed the one who appeared in the [app] ad, calling him by name and making his mobile phone ring".

The 14-year-old admitted to kicking the victim, but denied intending to kill him. The other minor, aged 15, confirmed that he was present and said that he did not participate in the attacks.

Both are already known to the police, with the older one having been convicted of theft in 2023.
