Successor of Américo de Sá since April 17, 1982, the 33rd top leader in the club's history, 86 years old, was reelected several times in isolation, except for 1988 and 1991, when he surpassed the doctor José Martins Soares, and 2020, when he had double competition.
The 68.65% of votes collected four years ago allowed him to leave behind the lawyer José Fernando Rio (26.44%) and the businessman and professor Nuno Lobo (4.91%), but they reflected the lowest percentage in 15 electoral victories added in his presidential 'reign'. Pinto da Costa (list A) now faces two opponents again, with Nuno Lobo (C) being accompanied by the former coach André Villas-Boas (B), who won four trophies for the 'blue and white' football team, including the championship and the Europa League, in 2010/11. Never has the sporting, financial and even infrastructural management of the leader with the most titles and longevity in world football been so contested, at a time when FC Porto is already far from the national champion title and almost out of the next Champions League, being third place in the I League four rounds from the end, with the same 62 points as Sporting de Braga, 18 behind the outstanding leader Sporting and 11 behind Benfica, the holder of the scepter. Starting for a last re-election, Pinto da Costa changed five of the current six vice-presidents and kept only Vítor Baía, former Portuguese international goalkeeper and administrator of SAD, in the candidates for board members by the list "Todos pelo Porto". Adelino Caldeira, who had been in the structure for about three decades, and Fernando Gomes, financial administrator since 2014, are major 'casualties', being flanked by Américo Amorim and Paulo Mendes, while Alípio Jorge Fernandes moves to billiards member. The structural renewal requested by Pinto da Costa led to the bet on António Oliveira, former footballer and coach of FC Porto and current SAD shareholder, on the businessman João Rafael Koehler, who will be responsible for the financial portfolio, and on the orthopedist Marta Massada. The lawyer Nuno Cerejeira Namora, 'vice' of the General Assembly Board (MAG), and the former hockey player Vítor Hugo, member for basketball, complete the club's board, with the administration of SAD's finances being destined for the economist José Fernando Figueiredo. If José Lourenço Pinto tries to be reelected in the MAG, Ricardo Valente, councilor of the Porto City Council, aims to succeed Jorge Guimarães, in the Fiscal and Disciplinary Council, and Américo Aguiar, cardinal and bishop of Setúbal, leads the dispute for the Superior Council. Transparency and good governance, sustainability and growth, women's sports and football, experience and relationship with members, young people at the center of the future or training and prospecting make up the six guiding axes of Pinto da Costa's electoral program. Combined with a 20% reduction in total costs, the restructuring of the FC Porto Group companies and the end of the payment of bonuses to SAD administrators, the refinancing of the liability is based on a 250 million euro (ME) instrument and aims at financial stabilization in two years and doubling revenues in three, with an annual increase of 25%. With 2,586 trophies obtained in 21 sports, 68 of which in senior men's football, Pinto da Costa wants to evaluate the creation of futsal and surfing and launch a women's football team, with the construction of the academy promised since 2016 already underway in Maia. This was one of the impactful decisions made by the current management in the months leading up to the elections, along with the anticipation of 54.3 ME in audiovisual revenue, the obtaining of 65 ME by the 25-year agreement signed with the Spanish company Ithaka Infra III for the commercial exploration of the Estádio do Dragão or the reassessment of the venue, which led to the reduction of negative equity from 175.980 ME to 8.5 ME at the end of 2023.
The reversal of this accounting value, which should become positive at the end of the 2023/24 financial year, was one of the three assumptions defined by Pinto da Costa to re-run, in addition to the construction of the academy and access to the round of 16 of the Champions League, an objective achieved by the set of Sérgio Conceição, who, together with the central defender and captain Pepe, has an agreement to renew the contract in the event of the leader's electoral victory.
