Sporting faces Vitória, one of the last obstacles on the way to the title

The league leader has a comfortable seven-point lead over Benfica, the defending champion and current second-place team, which ends the round on Monday at Estádio do Farense, while FC Porto, in third place, is already mathematically out of the title race.

The "Dragons" will be Sporting's next opponent, who already has the path open to be crowned champion for the 20th time, even if they lose some points in the next two rounds, since they will then play with three accessible opponents: Portimonense (16th), Estoril Praia (13th) and Desportivo de Chaves (17th).

The Alvalade team should not expect any easy reception from the team from Guimarães, who occupy fifth place, two points behind FC Porto and Sporting de Braga, in fourth place, tied with the "Dragons", in a three-way race for access to next season's Europa League.

Vitória has won five of the last six games in the competition (although they tied the last one, 1-1, at home against Farense), and won the only match against Sporting in the 2023/24 season, in the first round, by 3-2, but the coach's numbers are even more impressive.

The team coached by Rúben Amorim is the only one with a 100% winning record at home and can get the eighth consecutive triumph, equaling the best series in the I League, which already belongs to them, counting on the Swedish forward Viktor Gyökeres, the competition's top scorer, with 22 goals, despite having blanked in the last four games.

After the 2-1 defeat at Estádio José Alvalade at the beginning of the month, Benfica set their sights on the Europa League, for which they will face Marseille on Thursday in the second leg of the quarter-finals in France, where they will defend the 2-1 advantage achieved in Lisbon.

The team led by German Roger Schmidt faces Farense, in 10th place - with whom they tied 1-1 at home - with little to gain or lose until the end of the championship, since, in addition to being seven points behind their Lisbon rival, they have 11 more than FC Porto and Sporting de Braga.

More than dreaming of access to the Champions League, reserved only for the top two teams, the "Dragons" seek to secure third place, although the main objective is the Portuguese Cup, in which they host Vitória de Guimarães today in the second leg of the semi-finals, after winning the first leg 1-0.

The team coached by Sérgio Conceição, who was deprived of goalkeeper Diogo Costa due to injury, distanced themselves from the top of the table and allowed the two teams from Minho to approach in the last three rounds, losing to Estoril Praia (1-0) and Vitória de Guimarães (2-1) and drawing with Famalicão (2-2).

If the team from Guimarães will have a very difficult test in Alvalade, Sporting de Braga will host the last-placed Vizela on Saturday, the "ideal" opponent to take advantage of a possible new slip by FC Porto the next day against Casa Pia, which occupies a not entirely safe ninth position.

A little further down, in 12th place, Boavista will face Estrela da Amadora on Saturday with a new coach, Jorge Simão, who returned to Bessa five years later to replace Ricardo Paiva, the protagonist of the 12th "psychological shock" of the season.

Desportivo de Chaves, who on Monday left the last place in the I League, relegating Vizela to that uncomfortable position by beating them 1-0, will host Estoril Praia on Sunday in another important game in the fight for survival, on a matchday that opens on Friday with the match between Rio Ave (11th) and Arouca (seventh).
