Política 25 de Abril

"The 25th of April must be a date of unity, the ceremony here in the Assembly of the Republic represents this union of democracy and the regime in which we live. This is the regime in which we fortunately live and which the 25th of April created. Whoever wants another regime is in the wrong place", defended the parliamentary leader of the PS, Alexandra Leitão, in statements to journalists at the end of the solemn session commemorating the 50 years of the Carnation Revolution.

According to the socialist, it was along these lines that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made a speech of "a historical journey, in an analytical way of these 50 years, referring to personalities from various political quadrants".

"And in this sense it was a speech of unity around these 50 years", she considered.

Alexandra Leitão highlighted a phrase from the President of the Republic in this speech: "however imperfect democracy may be, it is always better than any dictatorship".

"It is the phrase that we have to take from here. Today is not the day to say what is going wrong in our democracy - some things are going wrong - but any democracy is always better than dictatorship, freedom is always better than oppression and solidarity is always better than division", she emphasized.

For the deputy and socialist leader, "democracy is something that is built daily"

The parliamentary leader of the PS defended that "it is always a great joy to celebrate the 25th of April, that initial day of democracy, equality, freedom", considering that these 50 years of democracy are successful.

The President of the Republic today defended the choice for democracy, even if imperfect, against dictatorship, arguing that democracies are the strongest societies and recalling that before the 25th of April there was no hemicycle of popular choice.

"Let us have the humility and intelligence to always prefer democracy, even imperfect, to dictatorship", said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the solemn session commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April in the Assembly of the Republic.
