In the speech at the solemn session of April 25th, in parliament, Rui Rocha quoted the song "Vejam bem", by José Afonso, to emphasize that, 50 years ago, it was discovered that "there are not only seagulls on land when women and men start thinking", but that the seagulls "fly when men and women start thinking".
"50 years ago, a seagull took flight. That seagull flew and we, like it, also became free to fly. Today, we know more about freedom than we did on that day", he said.
According to the president of the IL, we know today that "it is essential that seagulls fly", but that "it is not indifferent to freedom" if "the seagulls fly higher or lower, forwards or backwards and, flying forwards, if they fly faster or slower".
"Moreover, it is not immediately indifferent to the freedom we have the reason itself that leads the seagull to fly. If it takes flight to replace a dictatorship with a democracy, it flies for freedom. But if it takes flight to replace a dictatorship with a dictatorship of the opposite sign, the beach where the seagull lands has the same lack of freedom that existed on the beach where it departed from", he stressed.
That is why, Rui Rocha continued, "General Ramalho Eanes emphasizes the value of November 25th and says that it is a mistake to separate it from April 25th".
"That is why the Liberal Initiative will present a resolution today so that the program of the April 25th commemorations of the Assembly of the Republic will include a solemn ceremony on the fiftieth anniversary of November 25th", he announced.
